#loveforpets #petlove #pets

Ever since as a kid I was always very close to animals. My father used to understand my feeling well and my house was always filled with some pet or the other.

My first pet were rabbits, I had around 26 of them, all so adorable and cuddly. We brought two home and they multiplied very fast ultimately we donated some to loving family and some we had to leave in forest where they could thrive and survive.

Next I had a pair of parrots, they were too quirky. I made them learn ‘Kaun Hain’ (who’s there), I Love You, Get up, Good Morning etc. We always used to keep them open one day they flew away and came back. After few days they flew again and never came back. I always wished they were safe and happy.

Like that I had one hen, a cat, an aquarium full of fishes, a naughty monkey (who lost its way and I found him) was always eating 🙂 , and was there with me for may be just a week till it was sent back to jungle.. and I owned two guinea pigs which later was left in nearby jungle too.

You must be wondering how I kept them all together..ha..ha no I owned them time to time throughout my school life. My father gave away all of them before my ICSE(10th board exam) so that I could have my undivided attention towards my Boards Exam.

Almost after 20 years I was so excited to get two pet rabbits for my daughter she named them Hunny Bunny. They were very messy and used to bite us and bite on things especially.. ultimately I had to take them to a farm where they can stay with other rabbits.

My baby was very upset and insisted on getting another pet so we bought her a cat and I could never forget the sparkle I saw in her eyes when she saw the little one, she named her SNOW.

Snow – Himalayan Breed

Snow is now 1.5 years old, she’s a Himalayan cat. She’s playful and super active early morning and after 10 PM. My daughter and Snow loves to play hide and seek, paper ball, pretend fights etc.

Last month SNOW littered 5 beautiful kittens with Alfaz. All different colors – Black, Grey-White, Grey, Golden and Golden-White.

Daddy Alfaz – Siberian Breed

I was very scared what will happen at her delivery will she be alright, what I will have to, how I can comfort her n all.

Doctors warned us that they won’t be able to come or help in the process as Cats don’t like any outsiders at that time. If she’s delivering and need help it would only be me.

That’s what actually happened.. I was listening to music and suddenly I heard wee wee sound, My cousin opened the door of the place we arranged for her and there she was covered in blood and delivering her third kitten.

I contacted Doctor and he said I need to constantly monitor and see if the babies are coming out of sac properly, there cords are cut or not and if not breathing hold them upside down and wipe their nose and mouth. I was ready with all surgical items but I wasn’t ready.

I opened the door and checked all kids now there were 4, all were breathing fine out of sack and cord cut well. The 5th one she delivered in front of me, Snow was already tired so I had to perform the process myself including disposing off the placenta. Whew! I am scared of blood, I did not see my delivery, God gave me strength to do all this.

Was the whole delivery process easy?

Well Queen cat does most of the thing but she might get tired as kittens are littered at a gap of 20-30 mins and mother cleans baby, cuts placenta, eats placenta and cleans herself too after every process. Definitely she will be tired so be nearby and be alert. Sanitize your hands, blades, gloves etc and be ready to help her if she could not open the sac help her open, cut the cord and wipe of nose and mouth for kittens to breathe.

Did she deliver in the place I assigned her?

It was difficult as Queen will give delivery in a place she loves. I changed places almost 5 times and she wasn’t satisfied as she was still searching. Finally she liked the last place I set up. I added few cloths, plastic, then newspaper and top of it another cloth.

It was of no use she moved all these and gave birth in almirah wood, I had to clean all the blood and blood stains, it might not be similar with other cats. So relax don’t panic, seeing your cat in pain and struggle you will get the energy to assist her.

Are they completely on mother’s milk?

No, we started giving them Goat gold Powdered milk enriched with multi vitamin and nutrients which helps with growth. For few days I was feeding them every 2-3 hrs even during nights, and slowly I increased time to 4-5 hrs and now they are one month old I feed them twice a day. Mother is able to generate enough milk for all 5 of them.

Any special food for the mother cat?

When a cat is pregnant you need to switch to kitten food for her as it’s rich in protein. Even after delivery continue kitten food for another two months till the Queen is feeding the kittens. Give ample amount of water and wet food. We gave her Whiskas 2-12 month tuna in jelly, she finishes one packet in a day. In addition to that we give her boiled chicken and alternate days half boiled egg for protein.

Do not give too much food at once and don’t keep her food tray or water tray empty.. Serve in small quantity but serve regularly.

Have your kittens started on solid food?

Our Doctor said let nature take its course, mother will teach everything. If she does not then start teaching them on eating solid food and how to use litter box when they turn two months old. Start with wet food – start with liquid and few pieces and slowly increase the quantity.

For litter use any shallow box and add newspaper cuttings or any paper cuttings, do not use litter sands for small kittens as those lumps can lead to choking hazard.

Can we give cow milk to kitten?

I have seen many people feeding cow’s milk to kittens and they survived too but it’s risky. Our Doctor recommended not to feed the kittens cow’s milk as it might harm the kitten, it does not have required nutrition and it may lead to diahorrea leading to life threatening issues. Only feed kitten approved formula. We are giving goat gold

Goat Gold Milk for Kittens

Remember cats shift the kittens to 7 different places, that’s in their nature. She might need your help and come to you too to find a safe place for her babies. Try to arrange all 7 places nearby say a carton, a basket, an almirah etc. She loves the places which is dark and cosy and kittens needs warmth, so make sure all the places are warm and cosy.

Food is the most powerful basic necessity for every living being. It’s essential to keep us alive, it keeps us going. Wastage of food is such a clear indication that there is something fundamentally wrong with our social well-being.

When we were a kid we were often shielded from the misery of the world, most of us never had to worry about the next meal, by God’s grace there was always enough .

You might think that your personal actions don’t have a significant effect on food waste, Well! your perception is wrong as we do play a major role in this wastage of food every day.Our actions do have consequences , because of globalization the decisions we make in our local supermarket can have consequences on some other side of the planet.

Some of that waste occurs at the start of the food processing cycle (at the farm or at transport) but most of that waste is perpetrated by us, as the consumer. Globally around 1.3 billion tons of food goes to waste every year.

There is poverty and malnutrition in our country and to see people wasting food during social gatherings is quite distressing, this issue needs to be addressed right away.

One of the simplest ways to reduce our environmental impact and lower our grocery shopping bill is to cut back on the amount of food we throw away.It doesn’t matter that an ugly potato still tastes like a potato, or that a small apple is just as nutritious as a large one. The issue is “We want what we want and the rest goes to waste.”

1. People tend to pick the best-looking fruit leaving the ones with an ugly shape or color in the shelves. So, shop at stores that offer those ugly looking fruit at a discount as lot of those fruits and vegetables are perfectly edible. So why are they thrown away? Just because they don’t look nice.

2. Stick to your shopping list and buy the quantities you actually need. Just because something is “Buy 2, get 1 free” doesn’t mean you should go for it. If you buy more than you need then most of it goes to waste.

3. When unpacking groceries, move new cans, boxes, etc. to the back of the fridge & freezer and put older products up front to be used first.

4. Plan your meals for the week, Meal plan is one of the best ways to make sure you only buy what you need and use everything you buy, check which ingredients you already have on hand and only buy the extra things you need to complete your cooking plan.

5. Eat your leftovers, it can either be served up the next day or frozen for future lunch etc. Even if the amount of left over doesn’t make up a full serve it can probably be filled out by adding pasta, rice or more veggies.

If you don’t like or eat the leftovers make only what you will truly eat in a given meal. You’ve spent your time and energy to prepare the ingredients and cook the meal, don’t let any of it go to waste.

6. Buy fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables as when you buy them in season, you’re getting fruit and vegetables that have spent the least amount of time in any kind of storage facility and will last longer after the purchase.

7. Store fresh food appropriately. Make your food last as long as possible by storing it correctly. Keep biscuits, cereals and dry goods in airtight containers. Make sure your fridge is set to the correct temperature so fruit and vegetables will be kept fresh for as long as possible. Freeze items that you don’t need or won’t use up straight away.
8. Find a way to use overripe fruit and veg or freeze for later use. Fruit that has started to go soft can be stewed and served with ice cream, put in smoothies, made into crumbles or blended and made into popsicles. Spotty bananas make great banana cakes, soft tomatoes are perfect for making pasta sauce, and veggies that are starting to wilt are fine to go into soups and great for making stocks.

9. While eating out resist the urge to over-order, If already ordered too much take home leftovers. Start with a salad or tomato juice it helps curb initial hunger so you place a more reasonable order. If you eat out and can’t finish your meal, don’t be embarrassed to ask for a doggie bag. Many dishes, like curries and pizzas will make a great lunch reheated the next day.
Try to use every last bit of food that you already have stocked up, cook leftovers, share food with your neighbours. Donate Food. Use it up all.

Also, I would like to add here that If you are a traveller, as a traveller you need to educate yourself on what you should and shouldn’t do when visiting a new locale. Food is such a big part of travel, it’s important to learn the dining etiquette of each nation.
1. In JAPAN, Japanese consider it rude to leave food on your plate, whether at home or at a restaurant. It’s related to one of the fundamental concepts in Japanese culture, mottainai, which is a feeling of regret at having wasted something.

2. In THAILAND, don’t put food in your mouth with a fork. Only use your fork to push food onto your spoon. Some dishes are fine to eat with your hands

3. In Europe, Continental style calls for handling your fork with your left hand (with the tines facing down!) and your knife in your right. Don’t rest your elbows on the table, but don’t allow your hands to rest under the table, out of sight.

4. In China, however, leaving behind an empty plate is a sign to the host that you’re still hungry. If you don’t want to eat more food, consider leaving a little behind to let the host know you have had enough.

5. Don’t “flip the fish” in Poland or China. Both countries have an old superstition that flipping over a piece of fish on your plate will cause the boat of the fisherman who caught it to capsize. Bad luck.

6. In INDIA, you should finish everything that is on your plate because it is considered a respect for the served food, and food in India is considered sacred. In South India, where food can be served on a banana leaf, it is polite to fold your leaf over from the top ― not from the bottom, because that indicates you were not satisfied.

7. Don’t use salt in Egypt; don’t ask for ketchup in France. Doing so is considered an insult, because it is interpreted as you are saying that the food doesn’t have enough flavor.

8. In Muslim countries, eat with your right hand. Your left hand is considered dirty. If you happen to be left-handed, go ahead and use your left, but keep your right hand away from the action.

9. Burping. In some countries, this is considered a sign of appreciation at the end of a meal. For instance, it’s acceptable in China, and with the Inuit people in Canada. But be careful – despite the popular belief, it is not acceptable in Japan.

Mutton Kofta or Meat Balls

  • Servings: 4
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Print

Mutton Kofta or Meat Balls are essentially the minced or ground meat mixed with onion and spices and shaped into balls. It’s usually a dish in South Asian, Middle Eastern, Balkan, and Central Asian cuisine. I must say this is one my favorite Mom’s recipe.

  • Minced Mutton(Keema) 250 gms
  • Onion(Pyaz) small – 1
  • Green chillies 3-4
  • Coriander leaves 1/4 Cup
  • Cumin(jeera) powder 3tsp
  • Turmeric(haldi) powder 2tsp
  • Salt(Namak) as per taste
  • Red chilli(lal mirch) powder 2tsp
  • Ginger garlic(adrak lehsun)paste 2tsp
  • Cinnamon stick – 1
  • Cloves 2-3
  • Cardamom – 3
  • Black Pepper – 4-5
    (Kali Mirch)
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Lemon Juice 1 tsp
  • Nutmeg Powder(Jaiphal) 2 pinch

Step 1: Add all the above mentioned ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Cover and keep in fridge for atleast 30 minutes.
Step 2: Grease your hand with oil and make small balls.
Step 3: Heat a pan and place the balls donot add too much balls at a time as it may break, add 4-5 at a time. Cover and cook. It will start releasing water, cook until all of the water is soaked completely.
Step 4: Heat a pan , add oil and deep fry the mutton balls till its brown.
Step 5: Delicious meat balls are ready to serve with coriander or mint chutney.

Step by Step Preparation:

This is the full ingredients list:

Step 1: Take minced mutton 500 gms in a bowl or plate and start adding all the spices one by one.

Firstly, add finely chopped onions, I have taken one small size onion for this recipe.

Add green chillies, now this totally depends upon your taste. We like our koftas or meat balls little spicy you can adjust the green chillies as per your taste.

Coriander leaves is totally optional, there are people who doesnot like its taste at all.

Now its time to start adding the spice quantities as mentioned in the pictures.

Add oil, this can be refine oil or olive oil. I am adding olive oil in this recipe.

Add freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Add nutmeg powder or jaiphal powder, just 2 pinch. This is also totally optional as per the taste. It tastes good when added.

Mix all the ingredients well and keep in fridge to set for atleast 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes take out from fridge and grease your hand with oil and start making small balls out of the mixture.

Heat a pan without oil put the koftas one by one, donot overload. Add only 5-6 pieces as it might break. Keep the flame medium to high, cover and cook. Kofta balls will start releasing water …cook till the water is completely absorbed.

Heat oil in a pan, once hot add the kofta balls and deep fry it till it turns brown and aromatic.

Delicious Kofta balls are ready to serve. You can enjoy it with coriander or mint chutney or even add it to a curry.

  • Butter 1/2 Cup

Step 1: Take a bowl add all the dried fruits and add orange juice. The quantity of the orange juice should be as such that the dried fruits are completely dipped.Keep it in fridge overnight or more.
Note ( Orange juice is a substitute of Rum. Incase of Rum just replace orange rest everything remains the same)
(You can also prepare this recipe with water add 2 cups water to the dried fruits and microwave for 10 minutes)
Step 2: Sift all the dry ingredients.
Step 3: Seperate dried fruits from orange juice.(Don’t throw away the juice as we will be using it in the batter preparation.
Step 4: Add Sugar, butter, dried fruits, vanilla essence, mixed spices and juice in parts and make a thick consistency batter. You can add more orange juice if you feel the batter is too thick.
Step 5: Tranfer it to the baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 160 degrees for 35-40 minutes or more till the toothpick comes out clean.

Allow it to cool down in a cooling rack and enjoy this sumptuous delicious Plum/Fruit Cake this Christmas.

Step by Step Recipe with pictures:

Step 1 : Add one cup orange juice to a bowl. You can use fresh orange juice, I have used tropicana for this recipe.

Step 2 :  Add 1/4 Cup of Black raisins and Sultana

Step 3 : Add 1/4 cup Dates cut into small pieces.

Step 4 : Add 1/4 Cup anjeer and apricot cut into small pieces.

Step 5: Add prunes 1/4 cup

The next day :

Step 6 : Add all the dry ingredients, sift and set aside.

Step 7 : You get mixed spices in the market, if you are unable to get here’s the secret recipe to prepare the mixed spices.

Step 8 : Add cloves 5-6

Step 9 : Add mace 1

Step 10 : Add star anise 1

Step 11 :  Add fennel seeds 1 tsp

Step 12 : Add Dalhini stick medium sized 1

Step 13 : Add nutmeg powder 1/2 tsp

Step 14 : Add black pepper powder 1/2 tsp

Step 15 : Add cardamom powder 1/2 tsp

Step 16 : Grind it to a fine powder and mix to the dry ingredients.

Step 17 : Add powdered sugar or castor sugar 1 cup

Step 18 : Add melted butter 1/4 cup

Step 19 : Add all the fruits that were soaked in orange juice.

Step 20 : Add any 4 dry fruits of your choice 1 cup

Step 21 : Now start adding the orange juice that was used to soak the fruits. keep adding it in parts to make the batter. if you feel the batter is too thick even after adding all of the orange juice you can add additional 1 tbsp or more of juice to get a perfect consistency.

Step 22 : Sorry adding vanilla essence too late but it won’t affect the taste though! you can add vanilla essence while adding the soaked fruits.

Step 23 : Add this stage put your oven in a preheating state. Preheat at 160 degrees. Line up butter paper on all sides of the mould and grease with butter too. Start adding the batter and set it on all sides. Do not over fill the mould as cake will rise once baked so leave some space for it to rise.

Step 24 : Every oven has a different settings and heat at different level . I am covering this mould with aluminium foil so that my top layer of the cake don’t harden or burn. You can use butter paper instead or just leave it open.

Step 25 : Since I covered the top layer with aluminium foil, it took a little more time to bake. My cake was ready in 45 minutes. Insert a toothpick and check it should come out clean , if not bake further. Also always set you baking time to 45-50 minutes but the cake should be ready earlier then that. This step is helpful when you set your bake time to 35 minutes and the cake is not ready , you have to again preheat your oven and bake the cake, this might affect the quality of the cake. Setting a +time helps a lot but make sure you keep an eye on the time.

I am a village girl born and brought up in a very small tea garden area.

Earlier for everything that we thought of purchasing we used to wait for Sunday markets. Hawkers from every tea garden and from other villages used to come and sell variety of fruits, vegetables, snacks, cereals, ornaments and many more.

Far away from all the facilities that we have now like Internet, Cable, phone, laptop, car etc. We still used to find ways to play, keep ourselves busy and very happy.

Life was very simple and we used to love our neighbors. Not at all like nowadays where its sophisticated and complicated unnecessarily.

We used to breathe fresh air very close to nature. We used to live in small cottages and had loads of playgrounds and parks where we used to form a group and play Hide and Seek, freeze game and many more.

Wildlife sanctuaries like Jaldapara Gorumara was just nearby. We were so close to nature that we had close encounters with animals like Elephants, Leopards, Monkeys, Bear etc. We saw snakes many times closeby crossing us and we as kids still engrossed in our play not even worried at all… my kid will freak out if she sees such thing.. Ha.. Ha

I still remember climbing somebody else’s trees for fruits like Mango, Jujube(Ber), Blackberry(Jamun) and many more. We were chased by the owners and we used to love it. All kids used to gather and enjoy those delicious fruits.

Every evening there was power cut for an hour and everybody used to come out of their houses. All fathers together, all mothers together and all the kids yelling and shouting and playing. I feel nostalgic and reminiscense… I truly cherish those memories.

We really had plants and trees around us like thousands of them. Greenery was breath taking with picturesque view. Now in the city with such busy life we hardly used to get time to even take care of just one plant…

This pandemic definitely taught us a lot – good, bad.. Ugly everything.

Good because my bonding with my family.. my daughter improved substantially. In this lockdown she got to spend more time with me.

My 6 year old and me engaged ourselves in multiple activities to keep ourself occupied as we could not meet anyone or go anywhere.

We started with planting seeds and slowly we started bringing saplings and plants home. Some died some survived and we learnt in the process how much to water.. When to water it, how much sunlight is sufficient etc.

I live in an apartment with limited sunlight and I have kept mainly low maintenance plants along with succulents.

This video is the complete tour of my house that I truly love and call it My Green Paradise.

Share your journey.. your childhood memory that you cherish the most.. ☺️

1 tsp turmeric(Haldi) powder

1 tsp red chili powder

1 tsp garlic paste

1 bulb garlic finely chopped

1 smal size ginger finely chopped

1 tsp garam masala powder

5. In a pan add 2 tbsp oil, green chillies, finely chopped garlic sticks, finely chopped ginger stick. Saute till it turns a little brown.

6. Once it’s translucent add mutton with the stock(gravy) and cook till oil leaves the pan

7. Add 1 tsp garam masala and saute, cover and cook for another 10-15 minutes till mutton releases oil.

8. Once oil gets separated from mutton your recipe is ready.

At this point it smells amazing, you should definitely try this recipe.

Please adjust the level of chilli as per your taste.

A Story behind Tlismi Moti…Does it really work or just a myth?

How many of you have heard of Tlismi/Tilasmi moti. There is a magic in the name itself if you translate it sounds ‘Magical Pearl

Unfortunately there is no magic but science behind it.

So what is this Tlismi/Tilasmi moti?

Tlismi/Tilasmi Moti is a pendant or amulet that helps babies in painless teething. For centuries, our ancestors have been using the Tilismi Moti, which is an Ayurvedic Remedy and it is a proven solution to all teething problems.

What is Tlismi /Tilasmi moti made of?

It is a small white-colored pendant, which is made up of a combination of five metals (Panchdhatu) in equal proportions. The names of the five metals which compose the Tlismi / Tilasmi Moti are not mentioned as this is a secret combination and has never been revealed by the makers.

How does Tilismi Moti work?

The pendant or bead lets out certain magnetic forces just like copper rheumatism bracelets, which help to relieve the pain experienced by babies during teething. It comes in the form of a small pearl which is a natural harmonizer of energies around the face and the oral cavity of the child. Tilismi Moti is not a medicine or a magic remedy. It works on a scientific principle. It balances the energy around the oral cavity of your baby and is extremely useful for easing teething problems in babies aged 2 months 3 years.

How to use Tilismi Moti?

This ancient Ayurvedic remedy has helped so many babies during teething, not only in India but in other countries too. The Tilismi Moti pendant needs to be worn around the neck against the baby’s skin at the base of the throat. The pendant needs to be in constant contact with the child’s skin, just like the picture below

Is it safe to use Tilismi Moti?

It has absolutely no side effects. Most mothers who have tied the Tilismi Moti around their child’s neck, simply swear by the effects. Unlike commercial teethers, there is no risk of getting any infection by using Tilismi Moti

Through my personal experience I would say that it definitely feel that it works..I have tied this around the neck of my first child from 3 months to 2.5 years I am not superstitious but it really worked as her teething was smooth. I have tied this around my second child’s neck also as he’s 4 months old now with the hope that his teething is smooth too.

There are many varieties available some genuine some fake.. Be sure on the quality while buying I prefer the one mentioned below.

Also always tie two in one string like the photo below.

Share your opinions and experiences if you have tried it. Also I am eager to know the name of those five metals on which it’s build…if any one of you know please share with us.

Happy Teething to all little munchkins😊

10 little fingers.. 10 little toes… 1 cute smile to die for

It’s been 9 months since I have uploaded my last blog…

I am so excited to share the news that I am blessed with a baby Boy.

Giving birth isn’t easy. Once you plan you make up your mind, you accept and thrive to overcome all hardships that you may face. In the whole journey there is no looking back…You just think about the beautiful little you that you will hold in your arms, cuddle, care and love forever.

My journey with my princess was smooth for complete 9 months.. But with my boy it was truly a roller coaster ride.

I had internal bleeding on my first trimester and was recommended complete bed rest for 3 weeks. In this pandemic work from home meant double the work in office, work for home, cooking, cleaning…and my 6 year old complete care – food, bath, feed, classwork, home works and how can I forget her playtimes/activities with us.

I was granted 3 weeks of leave and rest and luckily I healed but when I joined back office I had to cover up for all the time loss which was strenuous.

By the end of second trimester I had developed gestational diabetes I truly started craving more for sugary foods but my dietician made me a chart which just had Oats, Ragi, lean meats and egg in my schedule 😦

I delivered a healthy baby by 8 months 4 days.

I am low on milk supply since the first month of delivery… I have tried everything all medicines suggested by lactation expert all home remedies suggested by my neighbors, friends, relatives etc.. etc none worked. I am exhausted pumping n pumping… and now my baby is on complete formula feed.

I really feed sad that I could not feed my milk but I really don’t feel guilty as I tried as much as I can..

I have been judged, misunderstood by my family friends for not feeding my child but it’s not by choice but by circumstances which I seriously fail to explain them. My baby is healthy and that’s what important to me.

Have any of you been judged… been through postpartum depression? With me well not in this pregnancy but I have been through it with my first child.

I used to cry unnecessarily, shout wanted to be left alone and felt depressed and tired all the time. That’s when I diverted my mind and started blogging and it helped.

Share your pregnancy journey.. What hardships you faced and how you overcame them….

Just in one word define the experience when you got to hold your child in your arms for the very first time….

For me it was ‘Magical’ 🙂

The past nine months of sleepless nights had driven me insane,

But the sight of something so beautiful made me forget all the pain.

I feel like God for a moment to have created a life.

Out of my own flesh and blood, was made my darling child. I promise to be the best parent to you my dear.

For losing you is the only thing now that I ever fear – Unknown

Phases in Pregnant Women’s Life & Healthy Food Habits

#motherhood #phasesinpregnancy #healthyfoodhabits

“If I had my life to live over, instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I’d have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.” — Erma Bombeck

One of the biggest miracle that happens in a women’s life is when she gives birth to her little one.

It’s that phase of life that’s cherished the most but it does have its own mental and physical stress that’s why its really important to maintain a very healthy diet through out your 9 months of bliss.

Do not over eat, do not under eat. Over weight and under weight will have it’s own pros and cons.

I have a 5 year old daughter and it was a normal delivery. I will share my experience and all healthy food and habits that made my journey smooth.

There are few important things that you should not give up on your different phases of your Pregnancy.

  1. Healthy Weight Gain: Appropriate weight gain during pregnancy is key to healthy baby growth. Stay connected with you health professionals and consult how much weight gain is recommended for you in phases. Doctors suggest women gain weight at the following rate:
  • 1 to 4 pounds (1/2 to 2 Kgs) total during the first 3 months (first trimester)
  • 2 to 4 pounds (1 to 2 Kgs) per month during the 4th to 9th months (second and third trimesters)

You weight gain also depends on you BMI body mass index (BMI)

You can use a formula to calculate your BMI online.

The general weight-gain advice below is for women giving birth to a child

If You’re
You should gain about(in pounds)You should gain about(in kgs)
Underweight (BMI less than 18.5)28 to 40 pounds12.7 to 18 Kgs
Normal weight (BMI of 18.5 to 24.9)25 to 35 pounds11 to 16 Kgs
Overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9)15 to 25 pounds7 to 11 Kgs
Obese (BMI of 30+)11 to 20 pounds5 to 9 Kgs

2. Healthy Diet: Water..water..and lots of water is a must. Drink ample amount of water. Stay hydrated, aim for 8 or more glasses of water each day. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, calcium-rich foods, and foods low in saturated fat.

Basic Nutrients Requirements:

  1. Milk and milk products: Have milk, yogurt, buttermilk, cottage cheese(paneer) & clarified butter(ghee) as they provide the protein and calcium necessary for the growth of baby.
  2. Eat food rich in vitamin and nutrients such as cereals, green leafy vegetables, fishes especially Salmon as its said to be rich in omega 3 essential for the development of brain and eyes of the baby. Avoid fishes like tuna, marlin, swordfish, king mackerel, shark etc.
  3. Eat legumes, citrus fruits as its rich in Vitamin C. The vitamin C content in orange juice will increase your baby’s ability to absorb iron in the body
  4. Have eggs: a great source of vitamin, protein and minerals.
  5. Sweet potatoes: are good source of beta carotene which gets converted to vitamin A inside body. It helps in boosting the immunity and improving the vision.
  6. Bananas: are great sources of folic acid, calcium, potassium and vitamin B6.
  7. Pomegranate: Pomegranate juice may hold promise for preventing preeclampsia, growth restriction and preterm birth when given to women during pregnancy, according to a recent Washington University study.
  8. Nuts: They have brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, fibres and other essential nutrients which are crucial for the development of the baby. I was asked to avoid cashew and dates in large amounts in initial stages of pregnancy by my doctor, walnut is a must.
  9. Oatmeal: Oatmeal is a good source of carbs, selenium, vitamin B, phosphorous and calcium. So, do add it to your breakfast.

  1. Avoid liquid cheese, raw and uncooked meat in pregnancy as it contains bacteria named listeria which causes infection called listeriosis. This bacteria is harmful to moms-to-be and fetuses and can result in a miscarriage if contracted.
  2. Avoid raw, uncooked egg in any form for e.g. Poached or fried eggs with a runny yolk, Lightly scrambled eggs, Cookie dough etc.
  3. Alcohol is a big NO
  4. Same goes for caffeine,  200 mg of caffeine is the maximum amount that is safe for pregnant women to consume daily.
  5. Fruits to avoid during pregnancy:
    1. Pineapple
    2. Tamarind
    3. Papayas
    4. Canned tomatoes
    5. Frozen berries
    6. Dates (1-2 dates in a day is fine)

Disclaimer: I am not an health expert all these I am sharing from my personal experience and knowledge from the first pregnancy. Please always consult your doctor on food and medications at each and every stages of your pregnancy.

My Pregnancy Story:

Year 2014 I was selected to work with one of the Top IT sector, for that I had to move from one city to another ALONE..

After starting my new job within 15 days I realized I am expecting. My first trimester went in juggling between hotels, hostels and then I rented a flat.

My aunt was so generous she came n stayed with me for two months.
Later my mother in law came and stayed for 5 months.

  1. I used to have a bowl of cornflakes with banana, apple and nuts with few drops of honey every morning.
  2. I used to carry 4-5 small tiffin’s with me containing vegetables,
fruits, dry fruits, lunch(rice or chapati with sabji).
Fruit juice once a day I used to buy from office and
almond milk machine was there in pantry from which I used to drink once a day.
  3. I actually ate very light at night due to acidity/indigestion issue.
    avoided roti, chapattis etc.
  4. In the third trimester I traveled back to my old city,
stayed with my husband for delivery.
We used to go for morning long walks, have coconut water,
come back home and eat bowl full of fresh vegetables and fruits.
  5. Take a break of 1-2 hrs. and have breakfast – upma, poha, dosa,
cornflakes etc. any of them. My routine continued like this, eating little at a time but eating every 2 hours
was a must. I had a normal delivery & my kid weighed 3.2kgs/7 pounds.
